I am highly considering upgrading to the Hondata system and have a couple questions, concerns, and confusion to try and sort out before I take the plunge.
1. I have a 96 GSR and from what I understand I will have to supply my own OBD1 ECU and have to buy some sort of adaptor harness to make it plug in, how much for the harness with the Group Buy?
Also, will ANY functions my stock ECU controlls be affected or removed? Will it control EVERYTHING the old one did?
2. Unless I get the stage 4 $ :O $ I cant do any tuning myself. I live in Ohio, who the hell can I take it around here, and what dealer will the unit come from and with what kind of tune related to my setup?
3. I already have a set of 380cc injectors, can I try to use these and possibly SLIGHTLY higher fuel pressure and/or if so and something doesn't work am I stuck with the injector that was programmed into the unit until I find someone with a Stage 4 unit to change it?
4. Does the unit have any tables to support Nitrous use? Saw it mentioned once in an old post but haven't seem anything on it in recent topics or on the website.

With all this excitement aroung the Hondata, I starting to consider it for my setup. Like Turismo though, I have a couple of questions:
1) Is it worth it for me right now? My car is completely stock except for a JRSC and a JR fuel pump. Will I need to get a new chip burnt for me after I get more mods?
2) What do you guys think about the datalogging option? Isn't it kind of useless with say a stage 2B kit? I mean without the ROM editor you can't tune your car anyways. So unless you have the stage 4 kit, you would have to go get it tuned by a Hondata tuner anyways and wouldn't they hookup a datalogger in order to tune it?
Thanks

I'll jump in and answer some of your questions. As you know, I've owned this system for about 2.5 weeks now. I researched it extensively before purchasing it and have used it alot since purchasing it.
You will need an OBD1 ECU like the P28, P30, or P72. The easiest to find is the P28. You can get one used from www.sohfast.com or if you shop around, you can find them pretty cheap. I got mine for $105 on eBay. Since your car is OBD2, you will need an adapter harness. I got mine from Kenji Plennert ([email protected]) for $235. Doug's are $250 and are essentially the same design except that his wiring is more flexible (a nice plus). I am not sure if he is offering a discount on the harness as part of the groupbuy.
Also, will ANY functions my stock ECU controlls be affected or removed? Will it control EVERYTHING the old one did?
The only thing that does not work on my car is the cruise control. I replaced the cruise control switch (located above the clutch pedal) with the Hondata clutch switch for full-throttle shifting (I have a stage 4B). Everything else works though. I've tried it all...radio, tach, a/c, heater fan, you name it. If there's something you want me to try out, lemme know.
2. Unless I get the stage 4 $ :O $ I cant do any tuning myself. I live in Ohio, who the hell can I take it around here, and what dealer will the unit come from and with what kind of tune related to my setup?
If you buy your kit from Tom Payn at Payn Technologies, you'll get his excellent 9psi GS-R map. Doug has a base map for an SC'd ITR. Tom's map is quite a bit more aggressive. I'm using that map scaled down for a 1.6 liter engine on my 6psi B16A and it runs very well. I would highly recommend getting the datalogging option. I got this option and I think it rocks!!
If you want changes made to your car, you can send the log files to a Hondata dealer or to another user with a stage 4 kit and they can use it to extract information about your car's state of tune. The logs are particularly useful for tuning partial throttle and idle settings.
3. I already have a set of 380cc injectors, can I try to use these and possibly SLIGHTLY higher fuel pressure and/or if so and something doesn't work am I stuck with the injector that was programmed into the unit until I find someone with a Stage 4 unit to change it?
The 380cc injectors should be fine. I have 440's for my 6psi setup and with max fuel pressure of 53 psi, injector duty cycle never exceeds 70%.
Whoever sells you the kit can take whatever map they are going to give you and scale it to suit your injector and fuel pressure settings. With 380's, if you idle at 50 psi and have a max pressure of say 70 psi, you should be good for at least 10 psi of boost.
4. Does the unit have any tables to support Nitrous use? Saw it mentioned once in an old post but haven't seem anything on it in recent topics or on the website.
I don't believe there has been any additional work for a nitrous add-on though. Doug can give you more answers here.

Thanks,
A couple more questions:
If I order can I make sure I get one from Tom Payne to get the JR-GSR tune?
And does he have a dyno sheet for the runs and or what kind of power did the car make with what mods (does he have a website?).
Is there anything else that could be done instead of the tuning time since it seems no dealers at this point are close enough to plan on visiting.
Is the Hondata modification upgradable at a later date?
Say I get a 2b now but decide I really would of rather had the tunability of the 4b. Do you have to buy a whole new unit or could it be upgraded by Hondata?
Damn this is a tempting deal.

Yes.

You'll need to talk to Tom about that. His e-mail address and phone number are posted in the topic "Attn: Sonnyballs". Give him a call if you need more info about the map.

That's something that you'll need to work out with Tom or Doug.

Yes. I upgraded from a Stage 2B to a Stage 4B. Doug sent me a replacement chip for the Hondata "blue box" as well as a clutch switch (for full throttle shifts) and the ROM Editor software. I already had the Datalogging option (I purchased it with my 2B).

It can be upgraded. See above.
